The single most common question that has been asked to this point has probably been, "Where is Nova Scotia anyway?" OK, time for some geography... those of you who already know what's what, can move on to a different page.
First of all, it's not Nova Scotia (or New Zealand, or Greenland either, for that matter), it's Newfoundland. Try not to make that mistake again. The island of Newfoundland is a part of the easternmost Canadian Province, the complete name of which is "Newfoundland and Labrador." An independent country until 1949, it contains the most easterly point in North America (Cape Spear), and its capital city, St. John's, is closer to Europe than it is to the west coast of the United States, which is where the "Around the Rock" expedition will actually begin.

From the terminal in Sydney, Nova Scotia, the ferry makes its run to Port aux Basques in about six hours. From Port aux Basques to St. John's is a long day of driving across the island along the Trans-Canada Highway. Once in St. John's, there will be packing and last-minute resupplying to be done before the actual paddling begins. (See below for the planned itinerary). The expedition will begin and end in St. John's, and travel counterclockwise.

The dates below are approximations, as are the mileage figures. Since the route that will be followed will be dictated in large part by the paddling conditions, it is difficult to be certain of the exact times and distances. For planning purposes, however, the following are being used:
