The Project

"Around The Rock" has been conceived as a way of re-exploring the coastal waters of the province of Newfoundland, seeing the beauty and the power of this unique area from the vantage point of a sea kayak. During the Summer of 2000, Ken Campbell will attempt to circumnavigate the entire island, a distance of nearly 1600 miles. The trip will take approximately three months, during which time he hopes to not only gain a greater appreciation of the island itself, but also a better understanding of the people who call "The Rock" home.

With a sea kayak, the rate of discovery can be slowed to a speed that allows for a better feel for the area. People and places do not fly past in a blur of snapshots and forgettable anecdotes; rather, the experience can be digested fully and recounted for others with a thoroughness that would otherwise be impossible. Through photographs and slide presentations, the internet, and magazine articles, Campbell's experience will be able to be easily shared, and will be a continued source of information in addition to being a celebration of this exceptional part of our blue planet.

The expedition will begin and end in St. John’s, the capital city, and will travel around Newfoundland counter-clockwise to take advantage of the prevailing summer winds. Although he will stop at many of the island’s coastal settlements during the course of the trip, much of Campbell's time on shore will be spent in wilderness areas, camping and living outside the domain of civilization. There are several portions of the trip that will require him to be out of touch with the outside world for extended periods of time, and it is during these segments that he hopes to come close to the Newfoundland of centuries past, the island that time has left unchanged.
