The Purpose
With the Age of Information well underway, it might seem surprising that there is still a large part of our culture that is unable to read and write. As the author of two books, as well as many magazine articles, it occurred to Campbell that his work was completely dependent on the ability of others to read it. It became immediately obvious to him that illiteracy is everyone’s problem, and the more that we as a society can do to help eliminate it, the more we will all benefit.
There are numerous non-profit organizations that are helping communities by bringing the highest quality educational programs and materials to children who may not otherwise have access to them. Innovative programs designed to improve learning skills in children and stamp out illiteracy do have one thing in common: they need the help and financial assistance that only a committed community can provide. "Around the Rock" will be taking pledges from individuals and organizations to benefit a variety of child literacy programs. The hope is not only to raise money for a very worthy cause, but also to raise the public understanding of literacy issues and give people an opportunity to become part of the cure.
